ADHD Closet Reset: One Small Habit That Makes It Easier to Keep Going

If you’ve ever started decluttering your closet… made progress… and then stopped, you’re not alone. It can feel like you’re doing the same thing over and over, without it ever really sticking.

And after a while, it starts to feel frustrating… like you don’t even know how to keep it going once you start.

In this episode of The Gentle Reset, I’m sharing why closet projects tend to start and stop in ADHD homes, one simple habit that keeps things moving, and how a space becomes easier to keep up with over time.

This Is Part 2 of the Closet Series

This is the second post in a four-part series all about creating momentum in your closet.

In Part 1 , we talked about how closet clutter isn’t really about the clothes...it’s about the decisions. Now we’re making that practical.

Why It’s So Easy to Lose Momentum

Here’s the mindset shift I want you to hear:

If your closet projects tend to start… and then stop…

you’re not doing anything wrong.

This is what I call squirrel brain.

You start with good intentions.

You make a little progress.

Then something pulls your attention away… or your energy shifts.

And suddenly the project is sitting there, half done.

So when you come back to it, it feels like you’re starting over again.

Not because you can’t do it.

But because the process doesn’t fit how your brain works in real life.

The Habit That Keeps You Moving (Even on Busy Days)

Instead of relying on long decluttering sessions…

We want something that works in the middle of your day.

One of the simplest ways to do that?

👉 Keep a donation box right in your closet.

Not in the garage.

Not tucked away somewhere else.

Right where you can see it and use it.

So as you’re getting dressed or putting laundry away, you can drop something in when you already know it’s not working.

No big decision-making session.

No pressure to do everything.

Just small, quick decisions as they come up.

Start With These 3 Questions

You don’t need a full cleanout.

You just need to ask these 3 simple questions:

  • Do I still wear this?

  • Do I actually like wearing this?

  • Does this still fit my life right now?

That’s it.

This keeps you from waiting for the “right time” to declutter.

Because it’s already built into your day.

And if you want to keep it moving, you can set a simple reminder to take the box to your car or donate it once a month.

A Closet That Became Easier to Keep Up With

BEFORE: ADHD CLOSET MAKEOVER
BEFORE: ADHD CLOSET MAKEOVER

I worked with a client whose master closet had slowly turned into a dumping ground.

There was plenty of space… but it wasn’t functional.

Holiday boxes, random doom piles, and everyday items had taken over.

Even laundry became harder because there wasn’t a clear place to put things away.

She had tried different systems before, but nothing lasted.

So we focused on creating something that actually worked for her day-to-day life.

We broke the space into small, manageable steps.

Focused on function over aesthetics.

And created simple homes that made sense for her daily life.

She shared:

“Allison took my overstuffed, overwhelming closet situation

and broke it into the smallest, most manageable steps.

Her approach was realistic and focused on function… that was key.”

One of the biggest shifts was that the space became easier to keep up with... including her laundry!
