Why Maintenance Feels So Hard with ADHD (and What Actually Helps)

If you’ve ever organized a space, felt good about it… and then watched it slowly fall apart again, you’re not alone. Maintenance is one of the hardest parts of managing an ADHD home.

But it’s not because you’re not trying hard enough.

In this episode of The Gentle Reset, I’m sharing why maintenance feels so hard with ADHD, what actually helps things stick, and how small resets make consistency feel more doable.

Why Consistency Feels So Hard

Here’s the mindset shift I want you to hear:

Consistency doesn’t come from perfect routines.

It comes from rhythms.

A routine sounds like: “I clean the kitchen every night after dinner.”

But real life doesn’t always work like that.

Maybe your kids have sports or afterschool activities that night.

Maybe homework takes longer than expected.

Maybe you’re just exhausted and the last thing you want to do is clean the kitchen.

And when the routine gets skipped, it’s easy to think: “I blew it.”

That’s where things start to unravel.

But rhythms work differently.

They sound more like: “Most nights the kitchen gets reset.”

Some nights it happens right after dinner.

Some nights it happens later.

And some nights it doesn’t happen at all.

But the next day, you come back to it.

That’s what consistency looks like in ADHD homes.

Not perfect follow-through… just knowing how to return.

What Maintenance Actually Looks Like

Maintenance isn’t about doing everything.

It’s about doing small resets often enough that things don’t pile up again.

Instead of: “I need to clean the whole kitchen tonight…”

It looks like:

  • clearing one surface

  • loading a few dishes

  • spending five minutes getting things back to baseline

That’s it.

Because when a task feels small, your brain is more likely to start.

And those small resets keep you from needing a full overhaul later.

A Simple Reset That Helps It Stick

If your kitchen is one of the spaces that builds up quickly, this is a great place to start.

Something as simple as a short reset at the end of the day can bring your space back to baseline… so you’re not starting from scratch the next morning.

What This Looks Like Over Time

BEFORE/AFTER: CLIENT HOME OFFICE
BEFORE/AFTER: CLIENT HOME OFFICE

I worked with a client whose office had slowly become a place where everything piled up.

Papers.

Projects.

Unfinished decisions.

She wanted it to feel calm and functional again…

but she wasn’t sure she could keep it that way.

We simplified the space and created clear homes for what she actually used.

But what stood out the most happened later...

She shared that she now clears her desk at the end of the workday.

Not perfectly. Not every single day.

But consistently enough that the space stays usable.

She said: “I know where things go now… and I feel so proud of myself.”

That’s what maintenance looks like.

Not perfection.

Just knowing how to bring the space back to baseline again.

You Don’t Need Perfect Routines

If maintenance has felt hard for you, I want you to hear this:

You don’t need stricter routines.

You need something that works with your real life.

Because when your home is:

  • simple

  • clear

  • and easy to reset

Consistency becomes easier.

Not because you’re doing more…

But because it finally feels doable.
