How to Overcome Task Paralysis with ADHD: Simple Shifts to Get Started at Home

If you’ve ever stood in a messy room thinking, “Where do I even start?”... you’re not alone. Task paralysis is one of the most common challenges ADHD women face when managing the home and you don’t need more motivation to fix it. You just need the right strategy.

In this episode on The Gentle Reset,  I’m breaking down what task paralysis really is (and what it’s not), how to shift your mindset to get unstuck, and a simple home strategy that makes starting easier... especially on the hard days.

Why ADHD Task Paralysis Feels So Heavy

You walk into a messy room and your brain instantly shuts down.

You freeze.

Scroll your phone.

Clean something random.

Do anything except the thing.

It’s not laziness.

It’s not procrastination.

It’s task paralysis and it’s real.

Task paralysis is the stuck feeling when your brain wants to get things done but can't figure out where to start.

It's that constant feeling of "ugh, I should be doing more."

So, you close the door. Put things in boxes. Let the drawers overflow.

Task paralysis isn’t a lack of effort... it’s your brain trying to process too much at once.

When everything feels urgent or unclear, your brain hits pause. It’s saying, “I don’t know where to start… so I won’t start at all.”

Shift the thought from "I have to do everything" to "I can begin with something." Starting small sets you up for success.

How to Move from Stuck to Started

One of my favorite ADHD-friendly strategies is setting up your environment ahead of time.

Take dishes, for example.

Instead of forcing myself to load the dishwasher right away, I started sorting dishes in the sink as I go:

🧂 Silverware together

🍽️ Hand-wash items in one area

🥣 Bowls stacked

It sounds so small but by the end of the day, it takes less mental effort to wash or load the dishes.  It’s one less decision in the moment and it helps me get started faster.

You’re not relying on motivation. You’re removing obstacles so your brain has a clear path forward.

A Client Story: Letting Go of Perfection with Laundry

One of my clients came to me overwhelmed by laundry.

She’d tried folding systems, organizing hacks, everything… but nothing stuck.

The baskets stayed full.

Every time she thought about putting clothes away, she’d tell herself, “I’ll do it when I can fold it perfectly.”

We worked on releasing that pressure. Instead of folding everything, she tossed items straight into drawers by category.

It wasn’t Pinterest-perfect. But it worked.

And suddenly? Laundry didn’t feel so hard.

Progress > Perfection. Every time.
