ADHD Burnout and Your Home Are More Connected Than You Think

Updated: 5 days ago

If your home has been feeling impossible to keep up with lately or like things are piling up faster than you can manage and you can't figure out why... it's probably not about your home. It's about your capacity.

In this episode of The Gentle Reset, I'm talking about something I see in almost every ADHD home I work with: the connection between mental load, burnout, and why home tasks are always the first to fall behind. If you've been hard on yourself about the laundry pile or the dishes in the sink... this one is for you.

Why Everything Feels Harder Right Now

If your home feels harder to keep up with lately, it's probably not about your home. It's because your capacity is lower right now.

May is a really full month... especially as a Mom.

You've got...

Mother's Day

Teacher appreciation

End-of-year events

Sports wrapping up

… there's just a lot happening all at once.

Energy is low and mental load is high.

There's so much to track and remember.

And for ADHD brains, that mental load makes it even harder to make decisions and follow through.

So if you're feeling more burned out than usual right now... that makes complete sense!

Home tasks like laundry, dishes, and vacuuming are usually the first things to fall behind...

not because they don't matter and not because you're "lazy"...

but because your brain is busy prioritizing everything else.

This is just what happens when capacity is stretched thin.

What Actually Helps When You're in a Full Season of Life

Stop trying to catch up on everything at once

When you're already running low, trying to tackle it all usually leads to doing nothing. It feels too big before you even start. And for ADHD brains, that all-or-nothing feeling is real... it can make it seem like there's no point unless you can do everything.

Pick one small reset instead

Instead of your whole house or even a whole room just pick one small space.

A clutter hot spot.

A surface.

A pile that's been bothering you.

Set a timer, reset that one spot, and let that be enough for today.

QUICK TIP
QUICK TIP

Starting small builds momentum.

Each small win shows your brain that you're capable and that makes the next reset easier to begin.

This is something I focus on a lot with my clients: not doing more, but figuring out what actually makes sense to keep up with right now.

What This Can Actually Look Like

BEFORE: CLIENT CAR
BEFORE: CLIENT CAR

I worked with a client who was feeling overwhelmed not just at home, but in her car too.

She travels a lot for work, and her car had basically become a storage space for everything.

At home, she had a lot of the same patterns... doom piles, especially with papers in the kitchen.

But instead of trying to tackle it all, we started by looking at what actually made sense for her energy... both physically and mentally.

Lower-effort tasks like sorting mail, doing dishes, and taking out the trash became her starting points. Higher-effort tasks like vacuuming? We intentionally deprioritized those... without guilt.

We also used a timer, which made a real difference for her.

Without it, she'd get distracted and jump from one thing to another.

With it, she could finally stay focused and stay on task.

AFTER: CLIENT CAR
AFTER: CLIENT CAR

From there, she started to build momentum. She even tackled her car too... something that had felt completely out of reach before.

That's what this work looks like.

Not doing everything but focusing on what actually makes sense right now, and building from there.
